Hotel mattresses often don’t suit every individual’s needs. Whether a mattress feels too soft or too firm, having an uncomfortable night can really impact the quality of sleep.
There are many reasons which can cause discomfort when sleeping in a hotel room, including the mattress’ firmness, unfamiliar pillow types, or even the room’s temperature. Just like at home, creating the right sleep environment is crucial for a good night’s rest.
Rebecca Swain, mattress expert at WinstonsBeds.com said : “Many people don’t realise there are simple steps which can enhance their mattress comfort, leading to a more comfortable and enjoyable sleep. It’s just as important to create a cosy sleep environment while travelling as it is at home.
Consider requesting additional pillows or blankets, adjusting the room temperature, or even travelling with a thin mattress topper for extended stays.”
Here are some tips which can help make your hotel mattress more comfortable:

- Bring a mattress topper
Taking a portable mattress topper with you for extended stays could help make all the difference as it adds an extra layer of padding and hygiene. Some hotels also offer mattress toppers so it’s worth asking at reception.
- Ask for extra bedding
Requesting extra blankets and pillows can help you personalise your sleep experience, adding extra support or softness to a tough mattress.
- Adjust the temperature
Making sure the temperature of the room is right for sleep conditions is extremely important for a good night’s sleep, typically 16-18 degrees is the optimal temperature to achieve the most comfort.
- Flip or rotate the mattress
If you’re able to, try flipping over or rotating the mattress to try and reach less used areas of the mattress which may provide higher levels of comfort.
- Double up
If the mattress is too firm, request another duvet, remove it from its cover and place it under the fitted sheet adding an extra layer of cushioning and softness.
