As we move out of the colder winter months, the arrival of spring brings milder temperatures, prompting many of us to reconsider our bedding choices for a more comfortable night’s sleep.
Chloe Barrow, an interior expert at Laura James, has analysed UK weather data from the past five years to reveal the optimal date to swap out your heavy winter duvet for a lighter tog option.
Barrow explains: “Looking at the data, we can see that UK temperatures typically rise by an average of 3.2 degrees Celsius from February to March. However, over the past four years, temperatures have remained below 12 degrees for longer, meaning people have been keeping their thicker duvets in use until later in the season.

We generally recommend switching to a lighter duvet once temperatures consistently rise above 12 degrees Celsius overnight. According to the latest trends and predictions, this year’s ideal date to make the switch is Monday 12th May. By this time, we can expect nighttime temperatures to be more stable, allowing for a more comfortable and restful sleep without overheating.
Of course, this will vary depending on your home. Factors such as insulation and window glazing play a crucial role. If your home is well insulated with double glazing, you might find it comfortable to transition earlier. However, if you live in an older property with single glazing or poor insulation, you may prefer to keep your winter duvet for a little longer.
When choosing a suitable tog for spring, a 7 to 10.5 tog duvet should provide the right balance of warmth and breathability as temperatures continue to rise. If you tend to sleep warm or have central heating running overnight, a 4.5 tog duvet may be a better option. For those who like to adjust their bedding throughout the seasons, an ottoman bed can offer convenient storage for switching between different duvet togs as needed.”
