The Top Ten Sleepiest Cities In The UK

Woolroom‘s study has revealed the country’s top ten most sleep conscious cities, with Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds leading the way.

NEW research by Woolroom, the UK’s premium wool bedding brand, has revealed the top ten UK cities that are most focused on getting a good night’s sleep.

Woolroom’s study analysed online search volumes from over 17 million Brits for key terms relating to sleep improvement across all major UK cities relative to their population size.

The search terms analysed included “how to sleep better”, “sleep supplements”, “how to fall asleep fast”, with each city allocated a Sleep Interest Score per 10,000 residents, resulting in a nationwide Sleep Interest Index

Manchester topped the ranking thanks to high search volumes for “sleep apps” and “how to get better sleep”, while the appropriately named Second City came next, owing to high search volumes around “sleep supplements” in Birmingham. Taking third place is Leeds, with a strong interest in “sleep headphones” and “sleep masks”.

Chris Tattersall, sleep environment expert and managing director of Woolroom, said: “In today’s fast paced world, getting the right amount of deep, restorative sleep often takes a backseat to work, family and social commitments. It’s therefore really encouraging to see people across the UK waking up to the importance of sleep, given it is such a fundamental pillar of good health and wellbeing.”

The leaderboard shows Scotland is also losing sleep over its slumber, with Edinburgh and Glasgow featuring fourth and fifth on the ranking as a result of both cities having high search volumes for “Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep”, the stage of sleep responsible for dreams, memory consolidation and healthy brain development.

Interestingly, “REM sleep” was the search term responsible for the highest number of searches overall, suggesting that Brits are looking for ways to gain the recommended two hours of deeper, restorative sleep each night.

Chris continued: “Our Clean Sleep Report previously showed that over half of Brits struggled to get a good night’s sleep, so we became curious to find out which parts of the country are most interested in achieving better rest – with the north of England taking the lead.

“My advice to anyone searching for ways to improve sleep, is to create a relaxing sleep environment in the hour or two before bed, avoiding blue light from screens, and adjusting your bedroom to 18 degrees – the temperature for optimal sleep.

“Sleep masks, headphones and supplements can be really effective, but an often-overlooked area is the material your bedding is made from. Using natural bedding, such as a wool duvet, has been proven as a transformative method for those looking to achieve a deeper and more sustainable sleep.”

In order of Sleep Interest Score, the top ten most sleep-conscious cities in the UK are:

  1. Manchester
  2. Birmingham
  3. Leeds
  4. Edinburgh
  5. Glasgow
  6. Bristol
  7. London
  8. Coventry
