Is your mattress ruining your sex life?

bad mattress

Our beds serve three main purposes: sleep, sickness, and sex. Yet, we often overlook how much a poor-quality mattress can impact our intimate lives.

Just as a good mattress is essential for quality sleep, it also plays a crucial role in enhancing your sex life. With this in mind, mattress expert Steve Adams, CEO of Mattress Online, shares how your mattress might be ruining your sex life and the best mattresses for a more satisfying experience.

How can a bad mattress ruin your sex life?

“A bad mattress can be the ultimate mood killer and ruin your sex life in multiple ways. By having a mattress which does not suit your unique sleeper type this can affect your sleep. A poor quality sleep has shown to decrease mood leaving you feeling grumpy and agitated. More physically a poor mattress can make movement difficult, uncomfortable, or noisy. If your mattress is too soft or sagging, you might sink in too much, making certain positions awkward and even tiring. While an overly firm mattress may cause discomfort on pressure points, which can make certain positions painful.

Lack of bounce can make it hard to get good traction and get a proper rhythm going, while weak edge support might leave you slipping off your bed mid action. Older, or budget spring mattresses can also creak loudly, which can be distracting and embarrassing, especially if there are other people in the house.

Lastly, if you have an old mattress, or fail to regularly clean your mattress, it can trigger allergies, sneezing, or skin irritation, none of which are exactly sexy!”

Steve shares three things to look out for when buying a new mattress:

Firmness and support

Mattresses firmness can have a major impact on the type of sex you share with your partner. For example a firmer mattress can offer balance and support, however too firm may increase some pressure points and not allow you the movement you need. A softer mattress can still support you but you may want to spread the weight more evenly for a more enjoyable experience. Ultimately if you find the right firmness of mattress that supports your body weight whilst sleeping, it should be perfect for your sex life too.

Responsiveness and bounce

“The best mattresses for sex should also have a bit of bounce to facilitate movement. A sprung mattress will obviously help you the most here, with the added bonus that they offer the same amount of support throughout the lifetime of the bed. However, the comfort filling can also play a vital role. Foam fillings, such as memory foam and gel, can offer great pressure relief and cushioning, whereas fibre mattresses are great at temperature regulating – making sure you don’t get too hot throughout your activity, polyester mattresses in general tend to dry out a little quicker though if overheating is an issue.

Size matters

“Bed size is just as important as firmness. For example, a single or double bed may work for solo sleepers – however a King, or Super King, can offer more room for comfort and spontaneity. A king-size mattress is especially great for couples who want extra space to spread out when they sleep and enjoy a more unrestricted experience when having sex.”

Steve adds “While a mattress won’t physically add inches, it can maximise what you already have by improving positioning. If you’ve been struggling with deep sinking and awkward angles, upgrading your mattress might just be the game-changer you never knew you needed – your sex life will thank you!”
