Nude awakenings: One in five Brits now sleep naked

Sealy, the world’s leading bed and mattress brand, has conducted the largest survey of its kind, the ‘Global Sleep Census’, polling 20,000 people worldwide, to understand more about our sleep habits and behaviours.

To celebrate National Nude Day on 14th July, Sealy has revealed that one in five Brits (20%) now choose to sleep completely naked.

The findings also reveal a significant gender difference in our choice of sleep attire. While seven in ten women opt to wear pyjamas to bed, men are more likely to sleep in their underwear or nothing at all, with more than 22% choosing to sleep nude. This trend is seen most prevalently among those aged 50 and above, with more than 32% of this age group opting to sleep without clothes.

Alison Jones, sleep expert at Sealy UK, commented: “Our Global Sleep Census provides fascinating insight into how people all across the world are choosing to sleep. It’s interesting to see such a significant amount of the population, particularly males and those over 50, embracing the comfort of sleeping naked. It has actually been proved that sleeping naked can, in fact, improve sleep quality, due to the body’s ability to better regulate its temperature during the night and even promote healthier skin.”

Amongst other findings, the research revealed that, as a nation, we’re among the worst sleepers in the world, with a concerning 95% of us failing to wake up feeling well rested and refreshed on most mornings – more than the global average.

A number of factors are likely responsible, including using devices before bed. Over ¾ of Brits admit to using a device, such as a mobile phone, before bed, which is proven to disrupt our sleep cycle and reduce quality rest.

Alison continued: “Sealy’s commitment to improving sleep quality extends beyond understanding sleep habits. Our innovative mattresses, designed with advanced Posturepedic technology, offer reinforced support and superior comfort to ensure a good night’s sleep, regardless of what you choose to wear to bed!

“We hope our latest findings will encourage Brits to think more seriously about the quality of sleep they deserve each night, to improve their wellbeing and physical health.”
