Bouclé beds have been popular on TikTok throughout the last couple of years and, with over 20 million videos under the search term, they’ve now hit peak popularity as Google searches are soaring.
Thanks to the TikTok trend, search demand for these beds has increased by 86% since last year, hitting 10K searches per month, with hundreds of people also searching for ‘boucle sofa bed’ and ‘boucle dog bed’.
One creator, @lauralestyle, racked up more than 3 million views over three viral videos of her bouclé bed, with comments like “I would not leave this bed” and “this room is so perfect”.
However, whilst demand for bouclé beds are at an all-time high, are they actually good for you?
Martin Seeley, Sleep Expert at MattressNextDay, has weighed in on the debate and shared 3 essential things you need to consider before purchasing a bouclé bed…

1. Bouclé is one of the warmest fabrics, especially in summer.
“For those that struggle to sleep in the summer months, when the temperature starts to rise, bouclé beds might not be the best choice for you. Bouclé is an extremely heavy fabric which creates a wool-like effect, therefore allowing it to create the cosy, intimate vibe we see in viral TikTok videos.
Whilst it creates a super snug environment, it can also make the space very warm. In fact, bouclé is one of the fabrics I would actively advise avoiding for those that struggle with sleeping in the heat, even if it’s solely on the bed frame. Instead, try naturally cooling linen bed sheets and wood slatted bed frames to help cool air flow throughout the room with ease.”
2. Pilling and snagging can make bouclé a bad investment.
“One of the risks of choosing bouclé as your bed fabric is that it often piles and snags extremely easily. Simple things like long, sharp nails or jewellery can cause snagging which diminishes the quality of the bed frame almost instantly, so those planning to invest need to take care not to damage it for it to stand the test of time.
If you have children or pets in the bed, I would recommend choosing a more durable fabric that doesn’t need constant care being taken so as not to damage the texture. A cat or dog scratching at the material could take you from a beautiful bouclé heaven, to an old rag-like mat of fabric.”
3. Time and patience is needed for regular bouclé cleaning.
“Unlike other bed frames, you will need a regular cleaning routine for one which uses bouclé fabric. Due to the texture of the fabric, it’s a fantastic place for dirt and bacteria to collect in the fibres. To avoid this, I would recommend cleaning it weekly.
For an easy-to-follow bouclé cleaning routine, start by removing any dirt that has collected with either a soft bristle brush, so as not to snag the material, or a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery setting. You can even utilise a lint roller to remove any stubborn dirt, such as pet hair.
Then turn your focus to spot cleaning any stains or discolouration. For this, you’ll want to use a sensitive laundry detergent with no nasty chemicals and a clean microfibre cloth. Alternatively, you can now find mild upholstery-specific cleaners in specialist shops. Once you’ve applied your preferred solution, carefully pat it with the clean cloth so the mixture soaks in effectively. Then, simply leave this to air dry.
For an extra spritz of cleanliness, you can add the solution to a spray bottle and mist the fabric in its entirety and leave it to dry.
The most important element of this process is to ensure you’re gentle with the fabric. Rubbing in the solution or vacuuming the fabric too hard can lead to damage. For bouclé with damage, evident stains, or stubborn discolouration, your best bet is to hire a professional to conduct a deep clean. Whilst this isn’t necessary unless the material visibly calls for it, it’s an additional investment you may need to make later
